When I got the Meta Quest 3, VR reached a level where I wanted to watch a film on it for the first time. 3D films in particular are nowhere better than in VR. It's just that with films I also enjoy the social side – and that is lost in VR.

But does it have to be? So I started building a web interface with access to my local film library. The core component: each "screening room" keeps playback almost perfectly in sync across several clients. That lets each headset position itself so precisely that my wife and I sit next to each other and watch together. Thanks to mixed reality we can still see each other – on a 200-inch 3D screen with a perfect picture. In theory a television could handle the sound by joining as another client.

So far the project has failed on something unexpected: having enough VR headsets with head straps that stay comfortable across a two-hour film. But I did convince my wife of the Steam Frame – so we're waiting (Soon™).
